| Outcomes: Students develop a lifelong critical attitude towards popular beliefs, fads and scientific knowledge. |

| Content: This unit describes and explains the mechanisms whereby the different fuels are used during physical activity. Students explore the mechanisms by which fuel utilisation is regulated and affected by exercise training and metabolic diseases. There is an introduction to several aspects of sports nutrition including carbohydrate, fat and protein nutrition for athletes. Molecular mechanisms of weight control, obesity and metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes are explained. |

Assessment: This comprises weekly short assignments and a large assignment (20 per cent) and a written examination comprised of a series of short-answer questions (80 per cent).
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
