| Outcomes: Students are able to describe mechanisms of pain and the modulation of pain that can occur through psychological and physical means with particular relevance to the role of exercise in the management of people with pain. Students are able to describe the pathophysiological basis for many pulmonary diseases, arthritis and diabetes. A general understanding of the incidents, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease in patients with medical conditions including pulmonary disease, arthritis, diabetes and chronic fatigue syndrome are gained. On completion of the unit students are able to prescribe and monitor appropriate exercise programmes for patients with medical conditions including pregnancy, pulmonary disease, osteoporosis, obesity, arthritis, diabetes and chronic fatigue syndrome. |

| Content: This unit focuses on pharmacological agents and their influence on exercise prescription, mechanisms of pain and exercise in the management of pain. Other topics include exercise for disabled populations, chronic fatigue syndrome, exerice in the management of types 1 and 2 diabetes and exercise indications for depression and other mental disorder. Management of respiratory disease and haematological conditions are also discussed. Exercise and its relationship to pregnancy, arthritis, management of osteoporosis and indications for cancer patients are explored. |

Assessment: This comprises a major assignment (20 per cent) and a theory examination (80 per cent).
